celebrating a birday

Posted on

Good day friends! Remember how I mentioned we celebrated a whole bunch of birthdays over the weekend? Yeah? Well, Friday was Ryan’s dad’s bday. He’s a bit of a backyard ornithologist. He’s got a collection of birdhouses and bird feeders that his feathered friends flock too. His yard is a great spot for bird watching. Soooo we decided to add to the collection with a touch of Circa Dee.

That’s right we gifted him a handmade bird house for his birday.

Made entirely from reclaimed wood with fabulous colors and texture.

The bird house has some history, naturally…remember our spindle candlesticks?

They were upcycled from this old Victorian porch railing.

After pulling the spindles apart, we did not waste the railing.  That became the chunky “front door” for the birdhouse with 2 openings.

And in case you were wondering, this bird house is a duplex.

Surprise there is a pop of yellow on the back!  The yellow and green walls are old wide flooring probably also from a porch.

There’s the master craftsman at work.  Rumor has it that there will be more reclaimed birdhouses coming to Circa Dee!

treasure monday

Posted on

I have been reading all of the Lucketts recaps out there in blog world.  I really wish I could have went to the antique market in Virginia this past weekend.  It sounds amazing…15 acres…170 dealers.  Swoon!  Judging by everyone’s pictures, it looks like there was a ton of talent and treasures to be had.  Hmmph…if only we could have made it.  We’re a little glum about it here but next year for sure.

We spent the weekend tending to our long overdue garden work. Lots of weeding, planting and mulching.  We also celebrated 3 birthdays with one each day.  Very busy, however, I did manage to find some new vintage treasures.  Lots of fun smalls.

Here are the highlights…

I am loving these salvaged fence finials.  They would make great upcycled wine stoppers.

Very old roller skates. I just couldn’t turn these down. They are pictured with a wooden toolbox. I got a couple of those.

Something about these cow creamers drew me in. So unique and I believe that Pottery Barn (or was it Crate & Barrel?) produced an all white version of these recently. Nothing like having the original.

This hand hook rug is like a million years old but the colors are still vibrant. I am on the hunt for more worn, hooked throw rugs like this one.  Sorry for the lousy picture quality.

If you follow me on facebook, you probably saw my mid-week find. A vintage pink thermos! I am smitten with it.  It is just asking to chill a summer sangria!

Another day, another scale…I’m still not sick of them.

How was your weekend? Did you go to Lucketts or treasure hunt elsewhere?

old savannah

Posted on

A few weeks ago (actually more like over a month ago) we went on a road trip to Savannah and I promised some antiquing highlights.  I went to a ton of stores as the area is swarming with all types of antique, vintage & decor  shops.  I snapped a few pics as I oohed and ahhed my way through the region.  So here are my top 5 based on the shops I visited…

Where:  As the name implies, 37th at Abercorn in Savannah

Style: Designer House Co-op

What to expect:  A huge Southern house transformed into a cooperative of antiques and designer vintage.  You will flow from room to room discovering a different style in each (and not knowing how to get out).  This house is seriously huge.  There is also original art and jewelry and and vintage clothes and a garden area and I could go on.  You can easily decorate your entire home from this store.

What to love about it:  37th & Abercorn has partnered with the Humane Society of Greater Savannah devoting an entire room to the cause.  Treasures sold in the room where donated to the Society.

Where:  The Paris Market is in downtown Savannah at 36 W. Broughton St.

Style:  Ok so this store is not really an antique store at all but more of a retail store with a lot of cool reproduction pieces mixed in with original collections.  Think Anthropologie or Terrain with a Parisian spin.

What to expect:  Two floors of treasures styled just perfectly.  Exposed beams and stone walls create the perfect backdrop for changing displays.  Of course I loved the French coastal thing they had going on when I was there.

What to love about it: You feel like you’re in Paris yet you haven’t left the East Coast.

Where:  Take a day trip over to Tybee Island and don’t miss Seaside Sisters on the way in at 1207 Highway 80 East.

Style: Part gift shop, part antique co-op

What to expect:  Vintage coastal decor probably right out of old Tybee Island cottages or Florida before Disney.  Lots of bright colors, wicker, bark cloth and other linens.  Do I dare say shabby chic?  You’ll want to buy a beach house just so you have a place to put all of your new, brightly colored treasures.

What to love about it: My favorite author, Mary Kay Andrews, sells her found treasures (and books) here.  In fact, you’re looking at her space above.  She does book signings and other events at the shop.  The owner was so sweet to offer to have Mary Kay sign my book for me.  Side note, I can’t wait for her new book Spring Fever to come out next month!

Where:  Pinch of the Past is located at 2603 Whitaker Street in Savannah and they’ve got 2nd & 3rd locations in Greensboro, GA & Madison, GA

Style:  Architectural salvage & restoration

What to expect:  I love a good salvage yard but that is only the beginning.  The building is a huge old factory with a few levels.  It is neatly organized with everything from plumbing fixtures to lumber to hardware.  Expect to restore your home from this shop.

What to love about it:  Surprise!  There is a mezzanine level filled with unexpected vintage housewares organized in an antique co-op store way.

Where:  As the name implies Habersham Antiques is located at 2502 Habersham St. in Savannah.

Style:  Traditional antique mall with endless rows of booths

What to expect:  Find a great mix of vintage and antiques covering the genres.  Each of the 70 vendors seems to have their own specialty so there is something for everyone.

What to love about it:  It is not often in antique malls that you find neatly staged booths where vendors have an eye for display.  I was also very pleased with the prices here.

Writing this post has made me want to revisit the area and explore the nearly 40 antique and vintage shops.  I know I only scratched the surface in the 3 days we were in the region.  On our way back home we visited the famed Black Dog Salvage in Roanoke, VA.  Check out that post if you missed it!

What is your favorite region for treasure hunting?

growing

Ok so it’s the beginning of the week.  The part where I usually post some highlights of vintage treasures we scored over the last week.  Historically I snap a pretty little picture of the new acquisitions together and call it a day.  Something certainly has changed though.  Somewhere along the way this went from a hobby of treasure hunting to a full blown business with an urgency to source new inventory.  Last week alone we brought 3 truckloads home!   The hunt is definitely my favorite part!

Yes, bungee cords are our friends.  You can expect to see all of this neatly organized at the new brick & mortar opening soon.

If you are considering turning a hobby into a business, you’ve got to be head over heels in love with it.  Seven days a week.  At least in the beginning anyway.  It’s true what they say:  Love what you do.  Do what you love.

There are plenty of blogs out there about turning your passion into a business so let’s see if I can just get you some treasure highlights today, shall we?

Here’s a sampling of last week’s stash.

Seriously just a sampling…old, cast iron urn.  I can’t wait to plant this baby.

Would you believe that this is the first vintage clock I ever bought?

I know it is about to be summer but I have been on a wool blanket kick lately.  This is the 3rd one I got in a week and about the 5th in a month.  Who could resist this vintage Orrlaskan though?  It’s hot!  Get it? Hot!  Ok moving on…

Adorable old painted stool.

Lanterns always make it home with me.

Is it too soon to start thinking about Christmas displays?  You’ll see these ice skates again in December.

My favorite find is most definitely this large ice chest on wheels!  Perfect for summer parties poolside.

happy mother’s day

Posted on

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mamas out there…new, expecting and grand!  I seem to have them all in my life and I truly hope you enjoyed your day ladies.

This post is getting up a bit late because I didn’t want to spoil my own mother’s present as she is an avid blog reader.

My mom requested a new-to-her chair for her computer desk an eternity ago.  I won’t mention the fact that this was meant to be a gift for her last Christmas.  Oh, I guess I just mentioned it.  Better late than never.  She really deserves a new seat to perch herself on after all that she puts up with from me!  Let’s just say that she is a workhorse when it comes to completing projects for me, the driver.  A volunteer workhorse at that.  Thanks Mom!

Anyway, this long forgotten dining room chair made the transformation to funky desk chair with a base coat of ASCP Pure White.  The legs and top were dipped in ASCP Arles then it was all clear waxed.  Just the Arles was hit with a little dark wax. Have I mentioned how much I love the color Arles lately?  I seem to use it on every other project.  It is so versatile.

I distressed it in a few random spots allowing some white and natural wood to show through the Arles.

The seat was completely rebuilt from plywood.  Then stuffed and recovered with a fun, bright floral fabric.  Sorry but there’s no before pic for this one.  Use your imagination. Brown chair, no seat.

So tell me, how was your mother’s day?

much ado about waxing

Posted on

Hola!  So I’ve been getting many questions about wax lately.  I so often mention how I finish a piece of furniture with wax after painting it.  I’ve mentioned clear wax and dark wax and aging and protecting.  Today I’m going to break down what that means and tell you my chosen waxes and techniques.

Mmm kay?

I’d like to put a waiver on this post and tell you that I am certainly no expert but I have learned a thing or two.  You may learn something or you may disagree.  Either way, I hope this inspires.

Let’s get started.

I almost exclusively use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint on all of my furniture revivals.  And on about half of my painted signs. The paint feels very, well, chalky when it dries and I wouldn’t call it finished at that point.

Have you ever walked into a resale store and touched the painted furniture?  I am always compelled to do this because I want to feel the texture and finish.  Is it chalky or dry?  Is it too waxy?  Or is it just right?  Call me Goldilocks but I like a cohesive feel meaning the paint and furniture have become one.  When it feels like paint ON furniture, it doesn’t work for me.  Am I making any sense?

This is where wax comes in.  Not only does it “finish” the furniture but it protects it.  There are 3 brands I use…

#1 Minwax Paste Finishing Wax

I tend to just use this on stained surfaces but you can use it on paint.  Two coats over stain usually does the trick.  This can be applied with a cloth or dry brush.  I usually use a brush.  Minwax is readily available in your hardware store.

#2 Johnson Paste Wax

I started using this one by accident.  I found it in the cleaning section at the hardware store and it was very inexpensive at $6-8.  I used it to seal and protect painted furniture.  I’ve used it again and again because I loved the results although this one is stinky so use it in a ventilated area.  Again, you can use a cloth or dry brush to apply it.  I choose the brush for ease.  I like Johnson’s because it seems to cure quickly with a nice hard finish.

#3 Annie Sloan Clear Wax

No shocker here that Annie’s wax is my favorite and most used wax.  The consistency is much smoother than the others.  Like buttah I tell ya.  I use an Annie Sloan wax brush for applying although, in full disclosure, I find the handle to be a little bulky.  The large brush covers a lot of area though and the bristles really get into the paint.  I use a cloth to wipe off excess in a buffing motion.

Clear wax, in general, helps the colors to pop and also highlights any texture in the paint.  I love that about it but sometimes you do not like to see paint strokes.  If that is the case, I advise sanding the paint with a fine grit prior to waxing.

For those of you that don’t know, Annie Sloan products are not available in your local hardware store.  Only at special retailers.

#4 Annie Sloan Dark Wax

I think this is where most of the questions are stemming from.  When applied lightly with clear wax, dark wax can give a slight aged appearance to furniture.  Sometimes you just want to highlight certain areas.  I typically use a small brush that I have reserved for dark waxing.  I also mix the clear and dark waxes together to get the desired “aged” look.

Ever wonder what it would look like if you used all dark wax?  Yeah, me too so I tried it…

Regardless of my choice of wax and application, I always buff it with an electric buffer and pad.  Just like you’d buff a car after waxing it.  Wax on, wax off.  This helps to give the finished product shine and luster.  You will not “feel” the paint once you get to this point in the process.  It all becomes cohesive.

Wax can be reapplied throughout the life of the furniture.

Oh and for cleaning wax brushes, I dip them in Canola oil or something similar and then wash them out with soap and water.

That’s my waxing M.O.  There are other brands of wax out there and a variety of ways to finish your furniture but these are my current go-to’s for indoor furniture.

two timing

Posted on

Here we are. Wednesday night already.  Today has been a busy day of foraging treasures in the rain. And sun. I will post some highlights of the vintage finds soon.

Anywho, I’ve wanted to get this before & after up for the last 24 hours.  Better late than never.

Take a look-see at this stunner.

I’m really happy with how she turned out.  The before is not too shabby.  Just a little blah, in my opinion.

However, I do really love the original hardware and wanted it to pop.

All violet and pretty on the outside.  Painted with ASCP Old Violet and ever so slightly distressed.

And warm Old White on the inside with a hint of dark wax to age it.

Top.

And bottom. I think the curves are the best part. The violet seems to highlight it.

This little lady is already up for sale on etsy.

P.S. You just got a sneak peek of BRICK & MORTAR!

fresh off the truck

Just another manic Monday. I wish it was Sunday.

The weekend flew by. Probably because I packed a week’s worth of activity into 48 hours. In reverse: another successful Clover Market. A wedding. A road trip to Maryland and back. A girl’s night. And buying.

How am I still standing? Ok I’m sitting. Who types standing up anyway?

I still managed to pick up some pretty great vintage finds along the way. A few that I may not want to part with…

Darling little nesting tables with glass tops. They need just a little work to be garden party perfect.

Oh how I love an old chicken coop. Like love love. The faded color and wear of this one is just right. Just right for a new life as a coffee table.

It was a big day when I found my first ever vintage Florida linens. I’ve long admired the kitschy style that is so often reproduced but this set is the real deal from the 1950′s. Tablecloth and tea towel.

And my final fave is this old box. Have you ever seen anything like it? They’re rare to come across out there.

It is an old delivery box that the bread man would’ve used before they switched to corrugated boxes. I can not find anything on T & C Baking Company though. Is anyone out there familiar with the brand? If so, please share. In the meantime I am admiring the advertising graphics and of course the perfect wear.

mini mellow

Posted on

Big thanks to all of you for your encouraging words on my news!  Circa Dee: Brick & Mortar is located in Montgomery County, PA in Worcester just outside of Skippack.  Don’t forget the grand opening is June 8th, 9th & 10th.  Actually, I won’t let you forget!  I’ve also added a Brick & Mortar tab up top where I will post updates.

Now onto the project…

Back in December I redid this dresser – Mellow Yellow.  She’s been quite popular – the warm yellow color, the dark ebony top.

Mellow yellow was my muse for my latest re-do. We’ll call her Mini Mellow.

Here is what she looked like before.  Good bones.

The only major flaw was the top which was all scratched up and gross.

I knew right away the top would be sanded and stained ebony.

The drawers I decided to do in ASCP Versailles with a hint of dark wax.  This color is really growing on me.

Then I painted the sides in Arles with a lot of dark wax finish.

Do you like the hardware?  I picked up a bunch of clay knobs like this in an antique mall in Savannah and of course I am kicking myself for not getting more!  Do you ever do that?

TTFN!
