tell me everything you know

About Brimfield.

Friends, May is on the horizon.  And it’s going to be phenomenal!

For one, we’re getting hitched.  I will have tons of details and pics to share here on the blog afterwards.  Can’t wait!

And speaking of after the wedding…you may have guessed we’re taking a honeymoon.  And our honeymoon week just happens to fall on Brimfield week.  Honestly, I didn’t plan that although one of my dreams has been to visit Brimfield and take it all in.  The antique wheelin’ and dealin’ mecca of the universe!  What better way to spend a romantic week as husband and wife?  Our first romantic week as husband and wife for that matter.

Ok. Ok. We’re not spending the entire week in Brimfield.  I haven’t completely lost my mind.  It is a pit stop on the way to our real honeymoon in remote Nantucket.  A location that we both have always wanted to visit.  We can’t wait!

So tell me what you know about both Brimfield and Nantucket.

What are must sees and dos in Nantucket?  We’re planning on lots of bike rides around town in matching cable-knit sweaters casually draped over our shoulders with fresh baguettes resting in our woven bicycle baskets.  Yes, seriously.

Beach Cruiser

And some fishing.

For Brimfield, we’ll be arriving in the beginning of the week so I’m hoping to watch the magic unfold while avoiding the late week traffic.  What fields are musts?  What are some local eateries that we should hit up?  Tell me everything you seasoned Brimfieldians!

And yes we’re bringing a truck to stock up.  And perhaps His & Hers flea market carts.  Pure romance.

a new display

A couple of weeks ago I posted this photo on instagram…

before

Gross.  I was in a dungeon rescuing this little piece of American history.  Is that too dramatic?

antique card catalog

I posted for feedback on whether or not I should strip it back to its original state – solid oak and brass pulls.  Finding a card catalog has been on my wanted list for quite some time!

According to my very official poll, most people liked the color.

And while I was on vacation in New Orleans, my antique factory shoe cart sold which was serving as a display piece.  That’s a good problem to have but it did leave me scrambling a bit this week!

I scrubbed away the filth on the card catalog keeping the history in tact and revealing the nice blue-green paint.  I think it makes for a really unique milk paint display with great patina.

The history is also pretty cool.  It is a turn of the century 20 drawer card catalog from Penton Kelly Co. which was located in downtown Philadelphia.  It was a printing firm and this catalog seemed to house client information.

Ultimately I decided not to strip it.  I needed to turn it around quickly and figured I’d leave the restoration project out there should someone want to take it on!  Painted pieces are all the rage right now anyway, right?

This sucker is heavy!  You can see that solid oak peeking out.  Each side of the cabinet has a 4 pane panel.

I just love these old pulls.  Check out the brass showing through.  I wonder why someone painted over the brass.  I guess we’ll be asking ourselves this same thing in the future about everything that is currently being painted.   Gotta love trends!

This guy is up for sale and display at Serendipity in Doylestown.

I am trying something new with my watermark.  I always thought it would be fabulous to have my logo instead of text but I’m not sure I like it!  Thoughts?

Back to preparing for Sunday’s Clover Market…

running

Oh my goodness, I have been running non-stop this fall.  We were out and about at various local antiques events every single weekend including our own monthly sales.  In fact, a dealer we met at one event likened it to being a carnie.  It is so funny because it is true.  I think I’ve become an antiquing carnie this season.  And for some crazy reason, I love it.  Yes, I’d give up a stable corporate desk job for this gig.  Call me crazy.

And wouldn’t you know that I have this weekend off but we’re having a party at our house?  A circus themed party none-the-less!  I kid you not.  Funny thing is that the theme was decided months ago before my carnie status set in.  Oh the irony.

Because my life has been a circus lately, why not embrace it and invite all of my friends and family to join as the sideshow for a day?  I’ll let you know how that theme plays out.  Missing Halloween this year (due to the storm) definitely has us in the costume party spirit.  Actually, Ryan and I (Wilson too) are always down for a costume party.

While gearing up for the circus party, I’m also preparing for the holiday season this week.  It seemed to come on strong and early this year.  Shops are decked out for the season and having holiday open houses already.  Our shop’s holiday season officially starts on November 17th when we re-open.  In fact, we’ve added lots of hours and we’ll be in the shop until just before Christmas with vintage and upcycled gifts, tons of holiday decor like wreaths, handmade stockings, ornaments and more.  Plus there will be milk paint gift baskets for the DIYer in your life.  Be sure to pop in over the holidays.

As for fall, we had a great season.  We closed it out yesterday at a chilly Clover Market. Regardless of the burr factor, my mom and I had a great time again.  Clover has such a wonderful community of vendors and shoppers.  Seriously is every city this small business friendly?  We’ve got some of the best artists and dealers around here along with some seriously savvy shoppers.  It amazes me how supportive all of the vendors are of one another too.  I love it!

I couldn’t be happier with everyone’s support in our efforts to raise money for MS research one Mason Jar Soap Dispenser at a time.  We nearly sold out of them again.  I say “nearly” because I’ve gotten better at forecasting how many to bring.  Thank you so very much!

Let me leave you with an image of what I believe is a unique treasure that the ‘rents and I found while scouring what seemed like the entire Eastern seaboard on Saturday.  Yes, you better believe I scooped up a 2 gallon Ball jar drink dispenser!  You know how obsessed we are with mason jars around here.  How could I not?  This will be filled and proudly displayed at our circus party this weekend.

just another manic monday

After a fabulously gorgeous weekend in PA, it is a cold and rainy Monday.  And that is A-ok with me.  It is forcing me to stay in and catch up on some work.  However, last week was pretty great for sourcing and selling vintage finds.

First let me tell you, yesterday was Clover Market…ahhmazing.  As always.  We had a fabulous crowd!  Sunny skies and fun neighboring vendors too.  My first customers of the day were from Massachusetts.  (Hi girls!)  They traveled to Philly all the way from Mass just to visit us at Clover.  How cool is that?  If you are considering making the trip, November 4th is the last Clover of the season!  I guarantee you’ll find some unique holiday gifts and a few gems for yourself.

Prior to my frantic day-before-Clover prep, I took some time to shop and work on a room in my own house.  It is no where near ready for a reveal but let me show you a few treasures that will be in the room.

I seriously fell in love with this needlepoint old man.  Isn’t he sweet?  When I first found him, I thought that I would sell him.  (I’ve been on a vintage needlepoint kick lately.)

Then the more I looked at him, I knew he was a keeper.  Now call me crazy but he totally looks like an old man Ryan.  And my mom agrees. So call her crazy too.  I mean seriously, I think this is what my fiance, Ryan, is going to age to look like.  I’m pretty sure he even has that hat already.  Ryan currently has a shorter, darker beard and the same blue eyes. We’ll check back with him in another 35 years.

So old man Ryan stays.

Next up is a corner hutch in fabulous aqua blue.  We moved this guy right into the beach house living room to serve as a bar area.  It took the place of an oversized dark bookshelf.  The change really opened up the corner visually and invoked a little beach cottage whimsy with the color.

Funny thing is that the guy I bought this from kept telling me how I could refinish the paint but I thought that was the best part!  I suppose I will fix the cabinet pull though.

I love scouting antique scales.  This particular one is a fudge scale.  The flat marble base is a great area for displaying books and things.  I can’t keep everything though so I will probably sell this one.

I picked up this enamel top cabinet a few weeks back.  It is pretty beat but I hope to revitalize it with Miss Mustard Seed milk paint soon.

So what did you do this weekend?  Find any good vintage treasures?

I’ll be spending the rest of the week gearing up for our monthly sale this weekend at the Brick & Mortar.  We’ll be rolling out the Miss Mustard Seed milk paint line.  If you are a local DIYer, you must stop by Saturday or Sunday to see all of the wonderful colors and products!  I may even have Miss Mustard Seed’s new book in stock too!  I’ll keep you posted.

a vintage monday

It’s been a while since I’ve had some good vintage loot to share on a Monday morning. Well, guess what, I found some good treasures this weekend!  I’ll let the pictures do the talking…mostly.

Let me just cut to the chase.  I think this is the coolest thing in the group.  A very old, theater poster for the Wood Theatre which was in Woodbury, NJ (now closed) highlighting Gone with the Wind starring Clark Gable & Vivien Leigh.   Circa 1939.  A Real collector’s piece.  Plus I love the green graphics!  This is why I get up at the crack of dawn on Saturdays.

And while we’re talking graphics, a double sided Guests sign.

More graphics – flounder tournament and minnow bucket.  The #12 will be great framed in a beach house.

I always thought this style minnow bucket would make an interesting wine bottle chiller at a backyard or back bay summertime party.

Lots of wirey old baskets and such.

I think I’ll save this adorable hen basket until next spring.

Speaking of spring, how could I resist a pink galvanized watering can?  I mean seriously!

And then I found a few small items like this mixing bowl. You know I have a thing for mixing bowls even though this one isn’t aqua.  And that glass compote, I just want to load it up with guords for a fall display.

Did you see the toolbox?  I bought this from an elderly man who said it belonged to his father who used it for years.  His father probably made it in the 30s or 40s.  I love stories like that.

So there you have the highlights from the weekend’s score.  There are some other smalls mixed in as well.  I do love the Victorian frame but it needs some work.  What is your favorite find?  And did you find anything good this weekend?

P.S. I stopped by Phantastic Phinds today – both the shop and blog!  The shop because they are now stocking Annie Sloan Chalk Paint for the Philly area.  And the blog because I wanted to talk about how excited I am that they’re now stocking Chalk Paint.  And to share a project.

my dad the antiquer

It seems like it’s been awhile since I’ve done a Sunday night treasure post. But I’m back with a little story this Father’s Day evening…

There are a ton of interesting blogs out there about collecting, thrifting, antiquing, etc. that I enjoy reading. I find that I click on the ‘about’ sections and so many tell a similar story…in a nut shell, the collector acquired their interest from their family. Either they were raised by antique dealers or hardcore thrifters and the interest was passed down. Makes sense to continue doing what you’ve always known, right?

Which is exactly how I didn’t develop this passion of mine.  You see, my interest is one that I’ve acquired all on my own as a young adult and it has evolved into a lifestyle.  My parents were not the type to go to flea markets or even hunt through thrift stores when I was a kid. They were not antiquers. They shopped at the tried and true commercial stores and bought new.  Don’t get me wrong, they were always sentimental about family heirlooms and treasures from their childhood.   We have many family pieces among us that tell a story.

A few years ago I dug an old, very cool, metal orange milk crate out of my dad’s garage that was holding tools or something else nondescript.  I asked him if I could have it.  He tried to tell me I didn’t want it because it was junk.  I said, “you watch!”  Little did he know at the time was that junk was going to be the fuel of my small business.  A week later he witnessed someone buy his crate from me.  That person saw the same potential I saw.

Although not an avid antiquer then, my dad wasn’t exactly new to “junk” but had never seen an item for more than exactly what it was or it’s original purpose.  Actually he’s always able to give me some background on an item I need more history on.  And now he thinks outside of the box and sees further potential in a found treasure like I would.

In developing my interests and business, I have been able to influence my parents over the years and they’ve certainly become antiquers. They hunt for treasures, brake for barn sales and call to ask me what I think like I’m the expert. I love it! I simply love that I have been able to sway them in such a way. I love the dynamic among us.

So anyway this week’s treasures were picked by my parents for me.  They picked out a few staples that I tend to go for.  I think they nailed it.

Enamel pots.  One of my original loves.  A really heavy one too!  And a small old ironing board.  I’m officially collecting these.  I have 3 in various sizes and heights.  Ironing boards are so versatile and pack up so easily.

An ash bucket.  I probably would’ve missed this but I’m so glad they picked it out.  It’s classic.  We will probably fill it with wood and keep it on the hearth of the fireplace.

A couple of old washboards.  Did you know these are being used as musical instruments?  I didn’t and tend to pass them up.  Fortunately my parents found a wood one and a brass one with beautiful patina.

The other side of The Brass King.  I will have to bring these into the shop so we can play during down times.

I think my mom and dad did pretty good out there!  I’m so glad that I’ve been able to share my passion and hobby with my parents.  Do you have any shared interests with your parents?

Oh and, finally, here is a harvest table that I picked up last week.  I love everything about its rustic and worn style.  Unfortunately it is just a bit too big for our dining room and we actually don’t need it anyway.  Darn because I think it is pretty amazing.  It’ll go in the shop when I’m ready to part with it.

Happy Father’s Day!  Thanks for reading a little bit about us.
