It’s been awhile since I’ve found anything really, really interesting. But luck was on my side this past weekend. You may have caught a lame picture of my new treasure on instagram or facebook but I thought it was due for a proper showing with real photos.
What is it, you ask? A Victorian crib/ daybed, of course.
It’s pretty much the first crib ever made that converts into a toddler bed. Oh, those Victorians!
A little mechanism on each side un-latches to let the wall down.
Just like that.
The beautiful oak detailing has a great patina to it. Although it would benefit from an oiling.
So what am I going to do with it? I thought it would make a fantastic daybed for our screened in deck. I have a vision of a sleeping porch lined with daybeds.
But the fact is, this antique was made for children, not adults. It is in such great, original condition that I don’t want to alter it in any way.
Therefore, I will be selling it. I’ll bring it to Clover Market in Ardmore, PA on May 18th. It would be a fantastic prop for a baby photographer. Did I mention that it folds up? And has wooden casters. Sigh, I just love it. Don’t you?
I just found a bed very similar to this for 10 bucks at a garage sale do you know what year these beds were most common ?
Hi Karenna,
I am not sure of the year but I would guess the late 1800s based on the Victorian style.
How much did you end up selling yours for my friend has one for sale for 60.bucks I think I can beat the price down a little but it has carvings on the the side slats but and is in perfect condition and everything is there
Hello, I actually have the same crib different detailing in the wood. It folds the same way, and it even has the metal pieces on the side to drop the side down! My parents bought it around the time I was born in 1978, They then used it for my brother in 1980. When my son was born, I of course used it for him and will be soon using it when my daughter is born in a few months. It’s an absolute beautiful piece. Your pictures are the only ones I’ve been able to find of this crib online.
